Why You Need Recurring Revenue For Your Retirement

In this article we’re going to look at why you need recurring revenue for your retirment versus other kinds of income which are less predictable.

As you embark on your journey of making money online for your retirement, you are going to be presented with different options for how you can bring in those profits. Some of them will require more work than others.

As an online entrepreneur, your goal is not only to generate an income, but one that is predictable and sustains your lifestyle. With a recurring revenue stream, you will get to enjoy ongoing payments that are coming into your bank account (think about the things that you pay for monthly which are expenses to you – mobile phone, cable TV, Netflix etc).  You want to be the person receiving regular monthly payments to help you sustain your retirement lifestlye just like that don’t you?

Once your systems are in place, you’ll get to focus on the generation of new leads as well as customer retention while you slowly scale your business to create more revenue for you. On other words use some of the income (profit) to create other assets that give you recurring revenue.

One of the biggest problems many online entrepreneurs face is that their income has too many fluctuations. One month they are well above their financial goals, and the next month, they’re struggling to meet their basic needs.  This was exactly what we found in our traditional self employed accountancy and management consultancy.  Some months our income was really good and other times not so.

When we began our online business we had a mixture of recurring revenue from the tools and resources we were recommending and some subscriptions that our students would need to run their business such as an autoresponder, a lead page creator etc as well as we were selling what is known as “high ticket” mainly in the education and training sector.

By having a more predictable and steady recurring revenue system in place, you’ll be able to count on a certain amount of money each month, which takes the pressure off of you and allows you to have the retirement lifestyle you want and why you started this online business in the first place.

Below, we are going to dive into the recurring revenue business model, so that you understand what it means, how to develop one of your own and set it up, market it, and then grow it into something more that can contribute to the type of lifestyle you want to lead – just like we do

Different Types of Recurring Revenue Streams

Before we begin talking about how to set one up and plan one, let’s look at the different types of recurring revenue streams you can generate online. There are basically three different forms of recurring revenue.

Subscriptions

The first one is a subscription based model, where people subscribe to your brand through something like a membership where they gain value each month. As long as you are performing for them and meeting their needs they will continue to pay each month.

An example of this is an academy we belong to which teaches marketing – how to get leads and how to convert them.  We earn a monthly commission from our clients and students who purchase this option from us.

The reason many consumers enjoy belonging to an online membership program is because they are a part of a community where they can connect with each other, ask questions of you, and even support each other in their goals.

This is why this is our number one recommendation to our students and clients looking to learn the marketing skills they need for their new online business and they in turn will learn then how to refer this from what we teach them or they decide to learn themselves self study.

The reason we like this is our students and clients like receiving ongoing value from someone they know and trust. They get to look forward to new information such as courses, templates, and other elements of content that meets their needs.

You can also offer different tiers of subscriptions so that people can choose one that fits their budget. When promoting this type of recurring revenue stream, you can offer a free or low cost trial to prove value before they make a commitment and they can get a sneak peek of the type of value that waits for them inside.

Licencing

The second type of recurring revenue business model is licensing. With this type of option, you are going to charge your customers for the right to use a product for a specific period of time, where it renews each month, quarter, or year.

Many online software developers use this type of recurring income model and the price is more attractive for a longer commitment, such as purchasing annual rights rather than monthly.

A common one that you may well have come across is themes or plugins for wordpress websites.

Digital Products

Digital product models with recurring revenue are the third option, and this allows you to bill customers on a regular basis for the use of your product. So if you develop a product that is cloud based, such as storage or a product such as an artificial intelligence tool, keyword research tool, etc., you can charge customers for using what you created.

An example of this is an email autoresponder system where the purchaser pays a certain fee each month for the number of subscribers they have, which increases the more people you get on your list.

Or another example might be a funnel builder of which there are many to choose from but all subscription based.  The one we like and recommend today since it includes many great features is this one

Developing Your Recurring Revenue Funnel

Now that you know what options you have available to you, let’s talk about you developing your own funnel of recurring revenue. The foundation of your business is going to be to develop a funnel that is irresistible to prospective customers but first…

Who are those customers going to be?

In it’s simplest form this is people just like you who want to do the same as you, have the same pains and challenges as you and who have the same desires and outcomes.

Your target audience.

These prospective customers are looking for a few things from you.

It starts with the value you can provide to them and how is your product or membership going to change their life or solve a problem for them in a unique way?

It’s going to start with the attraction process, where you are publishing content that brings people to your blog or social media accounts and presents something for free (we call this a lead magnet) and that gets them on your subscriber list.

Next, you’re going to nurture those prospects via email marketing so that you can prove the value you offer to people.

(You may be reading this in one of those emails as we regularly share our new blog articles with our subscribers.)

You’ll then present them with your offer to join your program or buy your subscription product.

Building Your Recurring Revenue Model

Think about how you are going to earn money from this concept. You have probably already chosen one of the three recurring revenue business models. The next step is for you to pinpoint who your ideal customer or general target audience is.

Not only do you need to understand the basic demographic information such as their age, gender, location, income level, etc., but you need to know more psychological and behavioural elements that tell you more about their pain points, preferences, and challenges.

Keep in mind that this is not a one time process for you. As a business owner, it’s up to you to understand how your customers journey will evolve over time. Their needs will change, and you have to be able to deliver something that addresses that transformation they require.

For us the pain they are experiencing is lack of income to fund their retirement.

We have solutions but we first have to be talking to the right people.  For example we have a Tik Tok channel that is specific on this and everyone who we get in conversation with ask us for our book that helps give them clarity and leads to a one on one all to further define their specific needs.

Marketing Your Recurring Revenue System

Your next step is to think about how you’re going to market your recurring revenue system. You want to be attracting your prospective customers and finding ways to encourage them to become subscribers.

Once you know your target customer or prospect you will be better able to tailor your messaging within your content, whether it’s on your blog, social media, or elsewhere.

Knowing your customer’s requirements, you need to showcase in your content the transformation that will take place whenever they become a member or user of your recommended program

For example our target customer needs to know how to get leads and how to convert those leads into buyers in order to generate an income for their retirement and the program we recommend does exactly that.

They also need to know how to create their own funnel and a lead magnet and one of our recommended resources does that too

You’re not just positioning your brand as one that is attractive for their needs, but your position yourself as that trusted leader and guide who will help them achieve their goals within the community of your recurring income system.

In addition to content marketing on your blog and social media marketing where you relay the value you will be providing to your subscribers, you can also use live events that are open to the general public and get people on your list using a value pack lead magnet so that you can cater to them directly via email.

Lead magnets are very easy to produce these days with both AI and PLR and can be adapted to match your required prospect

If you are running a network marketing business which we do alongside our business education and training business, your products are also something that you will earn commissions on on a recurring revenue basis so think about that too

Customers of your products who love them will keep buying them each month if they solve a problem for them.

Keto, Paleo, Vegan… these days, people are passionate about their unique approach to health and wellness (that’s us). But it can be hard to find products locally that support these unique lifestyles.

Why not make it easy for these folks to explore these diet-friendly products?

Why You Need Recurring Revenue For Your Retirement

Would You Join A Network Marketing Company For Retirement Income

At some point in your life you’ve likely been “pitched” a multi-level marketing (MLM), direct selling, or network marketing business opportunity.  We certainly have and our very first experience was Amway way back in 2003 when we were working as management consultants in the veterinary industry.

One of the veterinary surgeons asked us if we would “look at something” he was considering and being non the wiser to this method of “pitching” a business opportunity or even that such opportunities existed we were of course happy to help him.

The long and the short of it was a telephone conversation with another person who could explain it better and an invitation to attend a meeting “to find out more“…

That became the very first business opportunity we were involved with and even though it was ultimately not for us given the method of operation involved and we were still working 60-70 hours in our management consultancy practice we were to revisit the idea some years later as the concept of building a team and residual income definitely appealed to us.

Now whilst the pitch varies from company to company and the individual promoting it, the basics are that you can quit the 9-5 become your own boss and earn a good income.

Our next opportunity came in the form of an innovative video based technology company called VMDirect.  We loved talking about it and our clients were all business owners looking for new ways of marketing their businesses – it was all video based with video email, video streaming (like the zoom platform we use today).  We made so many friends through this business and it was very sad that it didn’t survive due to funding issues and being way ahead of it’s time to take off in a big way.  But the bonus is that the friendships across the world did and we still stay in touch.

Moving on…

In 2010 we gave up our management consultancy and accountacy practice and became home based online entrepreneurs and of course began to see many more pitches for opportunities but at this time we were focused on affiliate marketing and learning the tools of the trade and didn’t have time for anything else until Empower Network came along and boom we were back in the game.  It was so in line with what we needed to upskill our affiliate marketing clients (mindset, a blogging platform, masterminds and more).  We learnt so much during our time with this company and many people we worked with generated a good income from being involved and had their first taste of online success.  This was our first experience of building a team and we loved it.  It was called the Ten Ten Formula Team.

The truth is, to go back to the question, is that we do believe that joining a network marketing, MLM or direct sales opportunity is a significant solution to the current retirement savings crisis around the world just as we seen online entrepreneurship in its many forms as a solution.  You just have to have an open mind and a problem big enough you need a way to solve it!

Going back to the original question of would you join a network marketing company for retirement income, we found an article written in Forbes in 2014 (10 years ago as of writing this article) during our research where Robert Laura author of The Naked Retirement actually said he believed back then that the entire industry (MLM, Network Marketing, Direct Sales) was poised for explosive growth and can be one of the most significant solutions to America’s current retirement savings crisis.  Naturally he was referring to America as it’s his back yard so as to speak.

He goes on to say that whilst it may sound a bold statement it’s actually not if you understand retirement the way that he does (he’s an expert in this area in the USA).  The reality is, he says is making a successful transition into retirement has more to do with psychology than with money… and the same may be true for multi-level and network marketing.

“Don’t get me wrong, money has a role in retirment, but it’s not the primary one everyone gives it.  Combine that concept with eye-opening statistics like AARP’s estimate that half of al baby boomers (76 milion) are interested in starting a business and the makings for a massive trend are in place”

As far as the retirememnt saving crisis is concerned, more and more people are coming to terms with the fact that they probably aren’t going to be able to save enough money to just sit around and slowly deplete their nest egg until they are 100.  With the average 50 year old estimated to have less than $50,000 in retirement savings there is an obvious need to find alternative ways to either save more or generate supplemental incoming starting now (2014) and continuing through retirement.

From a personal perspective having been more involved with network marketing business opportunities in recent years we actually agree with him that they can be a solution to someone’s retirement savings

But more than that being a part of a community on the one hand to being a part of something bigger and better than their current career path and the prospect of working in that job well into their retirement (not quitting the 9-5 as it was originally pitched)…

And as in the case of our current network marketing opportunity, not just the chance to solve their financial wellness but also improve their health since our natural products address the many issues we have as we age and our retirement years.

Added to which MLM, Network Marketing and Direct Selling programs offer very low barriers into entrepreneurship, often providing training, support community and more.  Certainly something we’ve found over the years.

But we do have a proviso…

Not all companies and not all people will be right for you and you should take time to do your own research and work with one that has integrity and ethics and produce products you will use yourself… and if you decide to join a network marketing, MLM or direct selling company for retirement income that you treat it as a business and not a hobby.  Your Aunt Mary, your mother or your best friend is probably not the best person to be getting involved with!

Today with excellent training and the popularity of “social selling” you have the chance to make a nice residual income if you treat it as a business like we do.

Think about what you would need to earn to supplement your retirement and then find the right company, right products and right person to work with to help you achieve them.

It’s what we’ve always done when we’ve approached a new opportunity and will give you the best chance of succeeding.

Would You Join A Network Marketing Company For Retirement Income

Marketing Funnels Explained & Why You Need One

I was in a Facebook community group we belong to and this lady askeda question about her funnel she had created using a software we also use.

This is what she said “I need help to understand this before I throw up my hands and give up.  I don’t understand what I do next to get people to even see it…”

So I was able to ask her some question about her funnel in order put into perspective her question.   Things like what was she promoting and what was the desired result from creating this funnel and more importantly who was she wanting to attract.

These are all important considerations because at the end of the day a marketing funnel has a specific purpose.

Since this will be useful to anyone wanting to attract prospects and makes sales and needing to know how this all comes together I’m going to try and simplify this for you in the article.

Today thanks to the internet and social media, prospective customers encounter your business through diverse channels — word of mouth, ads, digital marketing, content creation etc. What you need to know is how do you nurture a prospect from their first awareness of your brand to the point of making a purchase and ultimately becoming a steadfast advocate?

You start by charting a customer’s journey through your business thus creating a marketing funnel strategy.

Within this article we’ll demystify the distinct phases of the marketing funnel and share the different strategies needed at each stage.

What is a marketing funnel?

A marketing funnel is a model representing the customer journey from a prospect discovering your business, brand, product, or service to the moment they take a specific action or purchase from you. We call it The Customer Journey and we see this in four distinct phases

1. Top of Funnel (Problem Aware) – At this stage of the funnel, you market to a wide audience to capture as many leads as possible. Your prospect knows they have a problem and that there is a solution but they don’t know you, your product, your company or the difference between your solution or anyone else’s.  It’s your job to convey to them that you understand their problem, their pains and that there is a solution and that your solution, tht you have it.  Typical top of funnel activities include publishing blogs and how-to articles and posting on social media platforms.
2. Middle of the funnel part 1 (Solution Aware) – At this stage of the funnel you will be marketing to an engaged audience who knows your brand. They are aware of their problem and know there are different solutions but not sure which is the right one. Typical middle of the funnel activities might be promoting and encouraging prospects to attend a webinar and to review and download case studies, ebooks etc.
3. Middle of the funnel part 2 (Product Aware) – At this stage of the funnel your prospect is aware of various solutions available but still not 100% decided if your product is the right one for them.
4. Bottom of the funnel (Most Aware) – At the bottom of the marketing funnel, your leads become fewer but more likely to convert. They are ready to buy and you are the person they want to buy from.  This is where it is essential through your marketing and communication your prospect is absolutly clear about your offer and you knowing your product intimately enough to explain it.  At this stage it really is about the relationship you have built and being there when they make that decision to buy. Typical bottom of the funnel activities might include live demos, product trials and customer references/testimonials – even a zoom call to talk with them.

As you can see in summary, the widest part of the funnel captures the biggest group of people who might be interested in what you sell, while the smallest part of the funnel includes the smaller group who are most likely to convert.

The only trouble is you don’t necessarily know where someone is in your funnel!

So you need to create content that appeals to all different levels.

How to develop a marketing funnel

Before you can create your marketing funnel strategy, you’ll need to first create a buyer persona or customer avatar and then develop content specific to them at each stage of the funnel.  Knowing this information is absolutely critical because you cannot market to everyone – everyone is not your perfect client for your product or service!  Sadly in our experience talking to newbie entrepreneurs they think that everyone does and we get it because we did too when we first started out.

Now we really focus on this and have a training specifically on how to define your perfect customer so that everything you do will not be wasted but designed for that specific person who is actually a fictional character you develop to describe in great detail your ideal customer.  Ours are called Patricia and Peter.

Now you have a bit more knowledge about having and using a funnel I hope it makes a lot more sense what I said to the lady talking about her funnel and what she should do with it.

Is A Travel Business A Solution For Retirement Income

Presumably you’re reading this because you’re looking to generate an income for your retirement and you’re wondering if it’s really possible.

We remember being in that exact same position when we were in our mid-50’s realising that retirement was on the horizon and we didn’t have much in the way of savings after losing much of our property investment portfolio in the crash of 2008.

What we did know was that we had to do something or we would be living hand to mouth on a tiny pension with the prospect of working until the end of our days.

That wasn’t what we had envisaged for our retirement.

We really didn’t know much about generating an income online at that time but coincidentally whilst researching online marketing strategies for one of our clients we discovered a whole new world of possibility.

People were searching for an purchasing online marketing training – in fact hundreds and thousands of people were searching.

Digging deeper we discovered millions of people were searching ways to make money online and many of them wanted to do this to supplement their retirement

In today’s uncertain economy, having multiple streams of income has become a necessity and not an option. The safest solution is to be financially independent of your employer and be in total control over the finances and its source of earning.

That was exactly the position we were in back in 2008 and the recession was our wake up call

Here again there are many choices – more so today that we began our online business over 12 years ago now in 2010.

Starting an online business is a lot easier than you probably think – there are people in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with successful online businesses so no matter what age you are and what level of experience you have with computers and the internet you can do this too.

Thanks to the internet it’s now possible for any of us to travel to and live anywhere in the world where we can work, play or generate an online income stream

For us it we began with affiliate marketing in the online education niche teaching others how to make money online and today it’s a hybrid of e-commerce, affiliate marketing and network marketing

Once you get started you will see some wild claims from sellers of online business opportunity products. A lot of people get involved with online business because they see these claims and believe them. While it is possible to make a lot of money in a fairly short time online, you will still need patience and it is extremely unlikely to happen overnight.

We have a saying “if it sounds too good to be true it probably is”

Be prepared to learn something new every day. When you are new to online business there will be a lot for you to learn. You cannot learn everything at once so be committed to daily learning. Even if you have been in business all of your working life it can be tempting to believe that you know everything. The online business world is different, so keep an open mind.

• You need to confront your fears head-on

Is An MLM Business A Solution For Retirement

Robert Laura, a contributor for Forbes.com wrote an article for stating that he believes MLM is one of the most significant solutions for retirement.  The article was published as far back as 2014 but we’ve since had Robert Laura on our podcast talking about why he believes it’s a solution for retirement.

At some point in your life you’ve probably been pitched a multi-level marketing (MLM), direct selling, or network marketing business opportunity we’re sure.  We certainly have

The first one we received was back in 2005 when we were approached by someone working for one of our management consultancy clients.  We don’t mind telling you we had no idea such a business model even existed back then!

While the approach varies from company to company, it basically promises a chance to ditch your 9-5 work schedule, be your own boss, and make lots of money while making new friends in the process.  Today there’s a much bigger picture to it as we’re sharing with you in this article.

We we’re invited to a hotel meeting and we immediately saw the potential from the perspective of generating a passive income and the seed was sown.

Whilst we didn’t remain long with that company, we learnt a great deal about how the model works and vowed to one day return to it.

As of writing this, so much has changed in the industry and the growth of social media so it’s no longer confined to “pitching friends and family” which has put so many people off.

Whilst there is seemingly endless debate over whether or not MLM or Network Marketing companies are “real businesses” there can be no doubt the industry is today seeing huge growth especially following the pandemic years of 2020-2021 when more and more people began looking at work from home opportunities.

We believe that there is definitely a positive movement in favour of Network Marketing, MLM and Direct Sales businesses as a solution for the retirement crisis.

As far as the retirement saving crisis is concerned, more and more people are coming to terms with the fact that they probably aren’t going to be able to save enough money to just sit around and slowly deplete their nest egg from age 62 to 100.  With the average 50 year-old estimated to have less than $50,000 in retirement savings, there is an obvious need to find alternative ways to either save more or generate supplemental income starting now, and continuing throughout retirement.

An increasing number of baby boomers are thinking seriously about whether their career paths are what they want to continue on with and shifting their focus from accumulating a giant nest egg to a desire to be part of something bigger and better… to have a positive effect on others… and working in retirement doing something more worthwhile.

MLM and direct selling programs also offer very low barriers into entrepreneurship, often providing training, support, and ample encouragement along the way.  As retirees begin to realize they need activities that keep them busy and connected to others, the time, energy and cost to participate in these kinds of companies make them very appealing.

Whilst earning a significant income might be the reason some get involved, many do it just for the chance of a social life and being with friends who have something in common.

We can definitely say this is true from when we were travellling round the world seeing people who were not really interested in making lots of money but just loved the social scene.  Money wasn’t the driving force for them but friendship was.

A friend of ours (also a baby boomer) told us on a call why she wanted to work with us in the network marketing business we work in  “I just need a little bit extra each month – an extra $500 per month would be perfect.”

The potential quite honestly is really open to you and what you want to achieve and why your want to achieve it.

It’s a business like any other business and you will need to learn new skills so don’t treat it like a hobby or as is famously said over and again, you’ll be paid like a hobby!

Personally we work hard at our business every day, although it doesn’t always feel like work.  Similar to other entrepreneurs who profit from their passion it’s rewarding for us because we’ve  found a product that has made in difference in how we feel… and we love selling it and helping other people start a business.

Is Tik Tok Becoming The Go-To Platform for Lead Generation?

That’s a very good question and one we would like to share our thoughts on in this post.

We admit that until recently we had stayed away from Tik Tok after opening an account when it first launched because all everyone seemed to do was ‘lip synch‘ and do silly dancing and that really wasn’t our thing at all

That being said, this year (New Year’s Eve 2022 to be precise) we decided we would start a brand new Tik Tok channel because Susan wanted to do something in the over 50’s health and wellness niche – specifically in relation to the menopause.

We had invested into a training course that showed us step by step how to do it because trust us without the knowledge Tik Tok is a minefield and you can quickly be sucked into watching videos instead of creating your own content for ultimate lead generation.

It’s knowing the little ticks and tactics that help you get from where you are to where you want to be in the fastest time possible and this is something we’ve always wanted to be able to share with our clients, students and readers of our blog

We don’t like to suggest anything without trying it for ourselves and seeing results

We started Susan’s Tik Tok channel – beyond50menopause and began creating short form videos as a creator account with the aim to reach 1,000 followers as quickly as possible so we could get a clickable link in her profile which is where the lead generation comes into play.

Now how long this takes depends on a number of factors and she achieved her goal in just 7 days with her first video attracting thousands of views, likes, comments and followers

This is the benefit of training and a strategic plan!

The things that are important are

1. Knowing Your Target Audience
2. Researching Hashtags
3. Creating Videos That Speak To Your  Target Audience

Was being a member of the Tik Tok Academy we joined worthwhile?  Absolutely because it saved us loads of time trying to learn it ourselves and quite honestly we would likely have gone down many rabbit holes and given up

Now it’s just a matter of following up with people who comment on the videos or ask a question, directing them to our link where she can share the products and services she recommends to her ladies

So in conclusion, is Tik Tok becoming the go-to platform for lead generation?

We reckon so but with the proviso that you learn how to do it so you don’t waste time and effort

Many people talk about creating a lifestyle business but sadly in our experience very few set out to find a business that meets that goal

Being an entrepreneur is probably one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.  It allows you to define what your life really is… what you want your life to be… and then build a business around supporting that lifestyle.

The best part, just as Chris and I have done is you make your own rules and you can set up your life any way you want.

As we write this we’re planning on moving to Portugal to live and work.  It wasn’t in our original plan although living somewhere warm during the cold winter months in the UK definitely was.

Best of all our business is established and continues to grow combining all the things we love like travel, teaching and training, writing books and helping others achieve a better life in their retirement.
