How to Overcome Information Overload

Are You Suffering from Information Overload?

This is the number one challenge for every single person who is striving to succeed online and it doesn’t matter if you are experienced at working online or just starting out!

Honestly, there is SO much information out there.  From free information on blogs, in give-aways and in articles through to courses you can buy from a few dollars to several thousand dollars.  It is little wonder that we all suffer from Information Overload.

How on earth do you succeed on line then?

From our own experience (yes we suffer from just the same problem as everyone else) it comes down to one thing and that is the “F” word  FOCUS i.e. lack of it!

Is there a magic solution?

Not exactly, but there are a number of things you can do to give yourself the best chance of succeeding online and it is a system that we use and which the most successful people on line also apply in their business.

Secret #1  Decide What you Really Want to Do

If you want a successful online business then decide what business that is going to be and make a plan to follow it through to completion.  That means learning how to do it from those who have already done it and can guide you along your chosen path.  Don’t be distracted by the sales letters that are full of hype promising you that you can make $1000 in 30 days by clicking a few buttons.  It is BS and it doesn’t work!  We know because we have been there and fallen for it too because we see it as the solution we want.  There is no “get rich quick” solution online anymore than there is offline.  Trust us – we have been working with businessess and individuals for more than 25 years and we have seen just about everything there is to see and heard just about every “scheme” that exists.

Secret #2 Focus

Decide on one course of action and follow it through to completion.  This could be your business model or it might be a style of marketing that you are going to apply in your business.

You need to resist the temptation to branch out into something new or try a new technique until you have got one model working well for you.  This is particularly true with newcomers to internet marketing where they are overwhelmed with the different marketing methods available so they “have a go” at all off them instead of doing one really well first then moving on to the next.  It’s not rocket science but it is the one thing that causes most people to give up too soon.

It takes focus and commitment to succeed plus a plan of action (think of it like a recipe) – if one of the ingredients are missing the result won’t be what you would expect!

Secret #3 – Avoid Distractions

This is a big one and very hard to get over but it is possible with huge discipline.  It means treating your online business as a business and making others aware that this is the case.  When you are “working” you are working on your business.

Shut down your email, Facebook etc and put your mobile phone out of the way whilst you are concentrating on your productive task.  Keep a notebook nearby to write down random thoughts you have so you can come back to them later (this was a tip given to us by one of our mentors and we are now working on a product from an idea we had whilst working on another task).

Secret #4 – Buy the Tools You Need When You Need Them

We have a rule that we no longer buy tools and products unless we are going to use them right away because otherwise we know, from experience, that they will sit on the shelf or on the computer doing absolutely nothing other than act as a distraction when we think about them from time to time.  We can tell you this from personal experience because we have spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on products that we have not yet got round to using!

Find a product or tool that you want to use in your business, research and find the best (or take recommendation from someone you trust) and then learn how to use it to get the best value for your money.

How many times do we hear from people that they have used a product, service, membership site etc and that it “just didn’t work”  What they actually mean is that they didn’t put the time and effort into learning and applying it.  Don’t let that be you – please.

Secret #5 – SAY NO!

This is going to take some practice but you need to say NO to HYPE.  Honestly, there is no “next big thing”, “click to success”, “do nothing” program.  Honestly, if it sounds too good to be true then it usually is.  Old fashioned methods work best!

Nothing can replace WORK and FOCUS but the combination of these two alone will keep you on track to success.

Secret # 6 Find a Mentor & Accountability Partner

This was the singular most significant decision that contributed to our success.  Having someone who can guide you and has “been there, done it and got the T-shirt” will be the best investment you can ever make.  Just having someone who you are “accountable” to really makes a difference.  That doesn’t mean they are going to check up on you to see if you have done what you said you would do but just knowing they might ……

It is the one thing that the students we work with value highly.  They know that they are investing in their future success working with us just as we do with our mentors (yes we have more than one).   Just remember it is a two way process!
