The Age Of No Retirement
The Age Of No Retirement : That’s the shocking truth of what the future is looking like for future generations. As baby boomers ourselves (the demographic group born during the post–World War II baby boom, approximately between the years 1946 and 1964. This includes people who are between 53 and 71 years old in 2017 as we write this article)
We’re currently following a series of articles in The Guardian “The new retirement: how an ageing population is transforming Britain” so we will bring you updates in a series of articles and videos as we comment on what we find as they look at retirement today and what retirement is going to look like in the future.
It’s hard to imagine, but life expectancy is growing by five hours a day, bringing huge challenges – and opportunities – and forcing us to rethink the way we live, love and work. This rapid period of social change is forcing us to restructure and rethink our professional and private lives; our relationships with parents, children and grandchildren and the knock-on effect for the economy and much much more. Now whilst we are talking about the UK this is very probably the same across the Western World and most especially the USA. And significantly almost a third of people born today can expect to live to 100!
Today we are faced with seeing peers having to work into their 60s to make ends meet … friends who, in their 60s, work as care assistants or cleaners. They are on their feet all day, struggling to earn enough to pay the rent, often in arrears, with the attendant threat of eviction … One of our personal friends in her 70’s works in a supermarket demonstrating different products to shoppers just to make ends meet. These are lovely, brave, very very very hardworking people – and with every passing month, their lives get harder and more frightening.
With all this happening those in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s (and especially baby boomers) need to be looking seriously at their retirement situation and when finding it falling short, do something about it.
However there is little or no suggestion other than cut your living costs, save more, pay off your mortgage(s) etc.
Thankfully, we were not going to suffer the position most baby boomers are finding themselves it. We were not going to live hand to mouth with a tiny pension (and we mean tiny because being self employed we never had enough money left over to save for our retirement and our only other provisions were property investments that were severely affected by the world wide recession of 2008).
We tell our story here just to give you an idea – ChrisAndSusanTheMovie.com – because there are alternatives to what everyone else is saying and if you are prepared to take a look it might just be just what you are looking for …
