Who Moved Your Cheese 🧀

And Why Change Might Just Be the Best Thing That Ever Happened to You

We’ve just got back to Spain after a whirlwind few weeks—celebrating Susan’s 70th (still hard to believe!) and our granddaughter’s 4th birthday with family in the UK

Then we were off to Orlando, Florida for a business event

That’s the kind of freedom we enjoy now—travelling for work and play, on our terms, thanks to our online business

We call it Hybrid Retirement (more on that shortly)

But while we were on the road, one little book kept coming to mind

A book we first read years ago… and still talk about often

Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson

If you haven’t read it yet, we can’t recommend it enough

👉 Grab it here on Amazon

It’s a short parable about four characters — two mice (Sniff and Scurry) and two little people (Hem and Haw) — who live in a maze and rely on cheese 🧀  as their source of comfort and success

One day… the cheese 🧀 disappears.

The mice, with their simple instincts, don’t overthink

They head off into the maze to find new cheese

The little people panic

They resist

They wait

One eventually realises: staying still is scarier than moving forward

So he takes the leap… and finds new cheese 🧀

The takeaway?

Change is inevitable – staying stuck is a choice!

When our cheese disappeared…

Back in the wake of the 2008 financial crash, we were working as accountants and management consultants…

Like so many others, the world changed almost overnight and we could see the writing on the wall for our business and our retirement future

We had a choice:

  • Keep hoping the old way would return…
  • Or step into the unknown and reinvent ourselves

We chose the second

  • We learned how to build an online business
  • We studied affiliate marketing
  • We invested in ourselves
  • We made mistakes but we kept going

And now?

We’ve created a lifestyle that gives us time, purpose, and a residual income

We’re calling it a “Hybrid Retirement”

Hybrid Retirement is our philosophy for life after 50

We didn’t want to retire in the traditional sense

We wanted:

  • Freedom to travel
  • Income that isn’t tied to hours
  • Work that feels fulfilling, not exhausting

So we created a blend — a hybrid — of part-time online work and full-time living

It’s the path we now help others follow too

Especially those who feel like their own cheese has been moved…

Whether by job loss, early retirement, shifting priorities, or just that sense of “there’s more to life than this.”

If you’re feeling stuck, maybe it’s time to explore the maze

Yes, change is scary

But staying stuck steals your time, energy, and potential.

If you’re over 50 and wondering what’s next, maybe a Hybrid Retirement is your next step.
