You Don’t Need to Invent a Business to Build an Income After 50
Why your experience, affiliate marketing and a little help from AI might be a better combination than you think.
What if the biggest thing holding you back from starting something new isn’t your age, your experience or even the technology?
What if it’s simply the fear of change?
We were talking about this during a training session with Mari Smith recently
So many people have wonderful ideas, years of experience and a genuine desire to o something different with the next chapter of their lives
But then come the questionsโฆ
Am I too old to start again?
What if I don’t understand all this technology?
What if I get it wrong?
And our personal favouriteโฆ
Where on earth do I even begin? ๐คฃ
We understand those questions rather well
Because back in 2010, in our mid-50s, we were asking quite a few of them ourselves
We Weren’t Looking for Another Career
We’d spent more than 30 years running our own accountancy and management consultancy business
We understood business. We understood finance. We’d worked hard and made plans for our retirement
Then the 2008 financial crash came along and gave those plans a rather unwelcome makeover!
Our property-based retirement strategy was in trouble, and suddenly the future we’d imagined looked very different
We didn’t want to start another traditional business
We certainly didn’t fancy going back to working 60 or 70 hours a week
What we wanted was a way to rebuild our financial security without sacrificing the freedom we were working towards
And that’s when we discovered affiliate marketing
Hang Onโฆ You Mean We Don’t Have to Create the Products?
That was one of the things that appealed to us immediately
With a traditional business, there’s rather a lot to think about
You need products or services, systems, payment processing, customer support, websites, marketing and all the other bits and pieces that make a business work
We’ve done all that
We still have the T-shirts! ๐
But affiliate marketing offers a different approach
You partner with an established company and recommend products or services to people who might genuinely benefit from them
When someone makes a qualifying purchase through your referral, you earn a commission
The company generally handles the product, payments and customer service
You concentrate on understanding your audience, building relationships and learning how to market effectively
Of course, it isn’t money for doing nothing to be abundantly clear
And for us, that was a rather attractive
Then Along Came AI
Fast forward more than 15 years
We’re now in our 70s, living in Spain, still running our online businesses and still learning new things
And suddenly everyone is talking about artificial intelligence
Some people are excited
Others are convinced they’ll never understand it
And some are probably hoping it will quietly go away!
We have news for youโฆ
We don’t think it will. ๐คฃ
But here’s something we’ve learned.
You don’t have to understand how every piece of technology works to benefit from what it can do
Think about it
You don’t need to know how to build a car engine to drive to the supermarket
You don’t need to understand the engineering behind your smartphone to send photographs to your grandchildren
And you don’t need to become an AI programmer to use tools that help you run an online business
What matters is knowing what you’re trying to achieve
Your Experience Hasn’t Suddenly Become Obsolete
We were reading two interesting articles recently by our friend Paul, co-founder of Home Business Academy the program we work with and do some of the coaching for
Paul was exploring two important ideas
First, why becoming an affiliate can be a simpler starting point than creating an entirely new business
And second, why AI alone isn’t enough
Because while AI can help you write emails, create websites and build marketing materials, someone still needs to know whether the result makes sense
That takes judgement
And judgement comes from experience, learning, mistakes and practice
We rather like that
Because it’s something people over 50 often underestimate about themselves
You’ve spent decades solving problems, making decisions, dealing with people, adapting to unexpected situations and learning from things that didn’t quite go to plan
Those experiences have value
Now, that doesn’t mean you automatically know how to market online
We certainly didn’t when we started!
In fact, our first mentor was just 27 years old
There we were, two experienced business people in our mid-50s, learning a completely different way of doing business from someone young enough to be one of our children
And do you know what?
It was one of the best decisions we ever made
We weren’t starting from nothing
We were adding new skills to everything we’d already learned
And that’s exactly how we think people should approach AIย ๐คtoday
So What’s Actually Changed?
Quite a lot, especially on the practical side
When we started online, building a website, creating a lead capture page, setting up email follow-ups and connecting all the technology could be a lengthy and sometimes frustrating process
Believe us, we’ve spent plenty of evenings wondering why something that worked perfectly yesterday had suddenly decided not to work today!
Now AI-assisted tools can help with many of those tasks
We’ve been testing the new AI-powered Builder within Home Business Academy, and it’s fascinating to see how much simpler some of the technical work is becoming
Websites, blogs, marketing pages, email sequences and even course or membership content can be created and organised with far less technical effort than before
Does that mean AI does everything perfectly?
Absolutely not
We still review, edit, question and occasionally tell our AI thinking partner that something sounds nothing like us! ๐
But it means we can spend less time wrestling with technology and more time doing the things that matter
Talking to people
Helping them solve problems
Sharing our experience
And, of course, enjoying the lifestyle we’ve worked to create
What If You Don’t Already Have a Business?
This is where we think things get particularly interesting
There are really two different conversations
If you already have a business, AI-powered tools may help you simplify the way you market and manage it
But what if you haven’t got a business at all?
What if you’re approaching retirement, already retired, or simply looking for a way to create an additional income stream?
That’s where affiliate marketing may be worth exploring
You don’t necessarily need to create your own products
You can learn to recommend products, services or digital tools from established companies
Some affiliate programmes pay one-off commissions
Others offer recurring commissions when customers continue their subscSome affiliate programmes pay one-off commissionsriptions or purchases
Recurring income can be particularly attractive when you’re thinking about longer-term financial security
But it’s important to understand that commissions aren’t guaranteed, customers don’t always stay, and building a sustainable business takes time and consistent effort
The opportunity isn’t in finding a magic button
It’s in learning useful skills and applying them to a business model that fits your circumstances
Perhaps It’s Time to Ask a Different Question
Instead of askingโฆ
โAm I too old to learn all this?โ
What if you askedโฆ
โWhat could I do with everything I already know if I learned just one new skill?โ
Instead ofโฆ
โWhat if I get it wrong?โ
How aboutโฆ
โWhat if I give myself permission to be a beginner again?โ
And instead ofโฆ
โAI is changing everything, and I can’t keep upโฆโ
Perhapsโฆ
โAI might actually make it easier for me to do something I’ve been putting off.โ
Because change doesn’t have to mean throwing away everything you’ve built
Sometimes it simply means looking at what you already have from a different perspective
We didn’t abandon our business experience when we discovered affiliate marketing in 2010
We used itAnd today we’re doing the same thing with AI
We’re still learning
Still experimenting
Still making the occasional mistake
And still having a lot of fun along the way
Wellโฆ most days
Ask us again when the technology misbehaves! ๐คฃ
Your Next Chapter Doesn’t Have to Look Like Your Last One
One of the reasons we talk about a Hybrid Retirement Lifestyle is that we don’t believe retirement has to mean choosing between working full-time and doing absolutely nothing
There can be a middle ground
A little meaningful work
An income stream you can develop around your life
Time for family, travel, health, new experiences and the things you’ve always wanted to do
That’s what we’ve been building for more than 15 years
And it’s why we continue to share what we’re learning
If you’re curious about how affiliate marketing and today’s AI-powered tools could fit into your own plans, we’ve put together a way for you to take a look at what we’re using
๐ Explore the Home Business Academy and see what’s possible
No pressure.
Just an opportunity to learn a little more and decide whether it’s right for you
And we’d love to leave you with one question.
If you weren’t frightened of getting it wrong, what would you love to try next?
Because sometimes the biggest change begins with simply allowing yourself to consider a different possibility
Here’s to working a little, living a lot and leaving a legacy
Chris and Susan
P.S. We started learning affiliate marketing in our mid-50s. We’re learning AI in our 70s. If there’s one thing we’ve discovered, it’s that curiosity doesn’t have a retirement age!
